ROCHESTER, Minnesota—There is no community across the United States where hunger and food insecurity do not exist and the need for food assistance continues to be high. Locally, in southeast Minnesota and western Wisconsin, one in six people are food insecure, including more than 15,000 children.
Local dairy brand Kemps, along with Hy-Vee, is taking action with a donation of shelf stable milk cartons to benefit Channel One Regional Food Bank, which will distribute the items to its network of food shelves, pantries and programs in 14 counties in western Wisconsin and southeastern Minnesota, including Rochester.
Milk is one of the most requested, yet least donated items at food shelves, as often, these facilities lack sufficient refrigeration. While fresh milk typically only lasts about 20 days from processing, shelf-stable milk lasts up to a year without refrigeration.
